I know this has been posted many times, but I have read and tried a few of the things and it is still not working.
All I need to do is sign the form, and it just has the message, " the author of this form has specified the fields which you can fill. Click on any field to start filling"

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described you are unable to sign the PDF form and getting the above error message.
Is this a behavior with a particular PDF form or with all the PDFs that you try to sign? Please try with a different PDF file and check.
Is this PDF form digitally signed by the author or a different user? If yes, once the PDF is signed it gets locked for further editing.
Please check the document restriction summary and see if adding signatures are allowed or not. Open the PDF > File > Properties > Under, Security tab check 'Document restriction summary' and see if signing is allowed.
